Despite difficult times in the pig industry with feed prices at an all time high The Pedigree Welsh Pig Society held another highly successful Show and Sale at Beeston Auction near Tarporley, Cheshire at the beginning of September.The Show was held on Friday 2nd and the Sale was held the following day.
This event is the “Showcase” for the final of The Welsh Champion of Champions Competition, held every year to celebrate and promote the finest examples of the Welsh Pig. The winning gilt, Gwynys Model 307 sired by Owersby James, is owned by Huw & Ela Roberts from Llithfaen, Nr. Pwllheli.
Ela and Huw started showing pigs at The Smallholder Show in 2008 and now own an award winning herd of twelve sows. Their lovely gilt has returned home to carry on the producing Show Winners. Reserve prize went to another stunning gilt, Brooksby Empress 33 celebrated winner of Pig of the Year Award at The Great Yorkshire Show, a great accolade for The Welsh Breed. The Brooksby Herd based at Brooksby Melton College, Leicestershire was established in 2004 to create interest amongst the students. They have enjoyed an exciting year in the show ring with many successes and of course Brooksby Empress has also gone home to breed further champions!!

Other awards went to –
Male Champion Welsh and Interbreed Reserve Champion was won by Ken Austin’s Burry James 383 travelling all the way from Reynoldston,Gower Nr. Swansea
Reserve Male Champion was presented to Chris Jenkins’ Burghope Emperor 3614
Female Champion Welsh again went to The Burry Herd, Burry Emma 238
Reserve Female Champion was Slade Emma 32 owned by Mrs Christine Vaughan
Interbreed was won by a stunning example of The Duroc Breed, Deva Nancy 455 owned Mrs Jan Walton.
It was good to see that the standard of Welsh Pigs is continually improving and there were some fine pigs on offer for The Sale next day.
