The ‘Welsh’ takes the honours at Chelford

The Bury herd of Pedigree Welsh pigs are enjoying a successful time both in the show ring and as trailblazers for welfare standards.

At the recent BPA Show & Sale, Burry Lucky Girl 175 (owned by E.W. & K.M. Austin, Burry Herd, Gower), was awarded overall Champion and went on to be sold for 475gns to T.A. Matthews, Melling, Liverpool. In addition to the winner, a further 6 maiden gilts sold for an average of £314.13 to the delight of the Burry herd owners.

‘We are delighted with the result as it illustrates both the quality and potential the Welsh pig has to offer pedigree and commercial breeders alike’ said Ken, who also owns ‘The Welsh Farmyard’ which sells the pork from the 1200 pig unit in the Swansea area via his butchers shop in Sketty.

In addition, Ken is the first and only pig producer in Wales to be granted the Freedom Food certification which has helped his pork sales into local high end restaurants and hotels. With wholesalers now also stocking Pedigree Welsh and numerous other outlets interested, the future looks bright for Ken as well as helping to secure a future for the breed.
